Local collections in Scotland

Armstrong, Norma E S.1977
Books, Manuscripts
ORIGINALLY PRESENTED IN 1976 as a thesis to the Department of Librarianship in the University of Strathclyde, this study reflects two years' research in the field surveying local collections and fifteen years' practical involvement in the Scottish local studies scene. Not only a comparative study of local collections in Scotland today, the survey provides for the researcher and the librarian, references to the location of local sources in archive repositories, museums, Local Authority, private and university libraries. The significance of the national collections of Scottish material has also been underlined. Introductory chapters on the management of the local collection form a practical guide to librarians setting up a collection and to library students also, offering solutions to the problems of identifying, acquiring, classifying and cataloguing local material. The role of the local librarian in education, publications and exhibition work is also examined and methods of developing and exploiting these services discussed.
