After leaving Dunoon Grammar School at the age of 15, Alexander Martin took up the position of Apprentice Clerk in the Chamberlain's Office in Dunoon. When war broke out, he joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve, serving in India and Egypt before commencing training as a Flight Engineer. He was shot down and killed on 31st December 1944 along with the crew on their mission 'Osterfeld'. This is the diary he kept describing his war service, which has been transcribed and edited by his only cousin.
