The coastal survey began as a contribution by ACFA to the archaeological research being carried out under the Discover Bute Landscape Partnership Scheme. The coastline of Bute, with its beaches and striking 'fossil cliffs' - the old shoreline of the period immediately following the last Ice Age - is one of the most attractive elements of the island's landscape. Used as base for fishing, ferries and cargo boats, for grazing stock and growing crops, it also features caves and rock overhangs which have provided shelter from the earliest times. The stretch of coastline to be covered in this third volume of the CARES project runs from Kilchattan Bay northwards along Bute's east coast through farmland, the grounds of Mount Stuart and the town of Rothesay and its suburbs, ending at Port Bannatyne.
