'The best thing of its kind ever produced' : an introduction to the 'Book of the Bazaar'

Lockhart, Douglas G. (Douglas Grant) 1948 -2017
Books, Manuscripts
Charity bazaars are a feature of the advertisement columns and news reports in almost every regional and local newspaper in Scotland from about 1850 until the outbreak of the Second World War. The bazaar was associated with a surprisingly wide range of organisations and purposes; churches were most numerous, however bazaars were organised by golf, cricket, curling and bowling clubs, while others supported the building of drill halls, cottage hospitals, masonic lodges, war memorials, university student unions and infrastructure that included bridges, harbours, pavements and electric lighting. As a result, the bazaar can be said to have left an enduring imprint in the landscape of towns and villages throughout Scotland.
