Scotland is unusually rich in field monuments and objects surviving from the remote past. They range from the enigmatic cairn of stone covering a humble burial to the splendor and architectural sophistication of Maes Howe, rightly claimed to be among the wonders of prehistoric Europe; from the plainest of pottery bowls to the exquisite craftsmanship of St. Ninians's Isle silver treasure. Examining these remains, and drawing on their own excavations in Argyll and the Orkneys, Graham and Anna Ritchie here provide the first fully comprehensive survey of Scotland's archaeology and early history, from earliest times to the union of the Picts and Scots in AD 843.
