Books, Manuscripts
William and Janet Johnston emigrated from Campbeltown to South Australia in 1839, when the British colony was two years old. They arrived with their daughter and five of six sons and, like many settlers, became farmers. Elder sons, William junior and James soon became proficient brewers and in 1843 founded the Oakbank Brewery, one of South Australia's earliest. Later, younger brother Andrew became involved with the brewery and by the mid 1850s, he and James owned and operated it and had founded a hotel group to distribute their ales and other beverages. J&AG Johnston Ltd has witnessed numerous successes and challenges in more than 160 years as a family business. 'Brewers and hoteliers' provides a detailed insight into the dynamics of a South Australian icon.
