Daniel Campbell of Shawfield and Islay was a towering figure in early 18th century Scottish history. Known as 'Great' Daniel due to both his height and his success, his life spanned Union with England and the final suppression of the Jacobite cause. Raised amid the violence of the late 17th century highlands, he left home to make his fortune, initially trading illegally with the English colonies of North America and the Caribbean. Eventually his mercantile success laid the foundations of Glasgow's role in global trade and he became one of the richest men in Scotland.
