The historic shopfronts of Perth : an architectural history

Lennie, Lindsay Ann2009
Books, Manuscripts
Perth's origins as a Royal Burgh probably date back to about 1125 and its important status as a town of trade was confirmed by its earliest surviving Royal Charter granted by King William the Lion circa 1210. For centuries this was carried out at markets and annual fairs, but gradually the fixed shops which we recognise today emerged and were well established by the end of the 18th century. This publication aims to demonstrate the quality of historic shops which exist in Perth through the use of both modern images and a variety of archival sources.
