Only a year ago George Washington Anderson was a black slave toiling in the hemp fields of a Missouri farm. But times change, and so do people. Now it's 1865, and he's been living under the name Free Anderson ever since the day his father died and he escaped to join the Union army. When he witnesses a white corporal's dereliction of duty at the Battle of Palmito Ranch in Texas, Free makes a lifelong enemy at the end of the war. Honorably discharged he sets out for home to find his mother. At the demolished farm, he learns that a posse of white men is hunting him. Free's days as a soldier may be over, but his war is just beginning.
