John Groome was born in 1907 in Manor House Farm in Northamptonshire. He had a life long interest in the Boy Scout movement and maintained contacts all his life with Scouts and Scout leaders, especially those with whom he had worked during Glasgow productions of 'Gang Shows'. He started work as a telephone engineer in London and his work took him to live in Scotland in 1939. He retired as a telephone engineer executive in 1967 to live for fifteen years at Cuilness on the east bank of Loch Lomod, about a mile and a half south of Inversnaid. His illustrated diaries cover many varied aspects of his life including encounters with walkers and sailors, attempts at self-sufficiency, an interest in wild and cultivated flora and fauna, and working with sheep and sheep farmers.
