Protest at the pier

Mitchell, John2004
Books, Manuscripts
A set-to which took place at a Clyde resort in August 1853, as retainers of the owner of the pier unsuccessfully attempted to prevent steamboat excursionists from landing on a Sunday, has earned for itself a place in the history of popular disturbances. John Mitchell describes here a lesser known confrontation between steamboat passengers and pier staff - on this occasion over the payment of landing fees at Loch Lomond.
