Author Willie Melville has been a member of the wider lifeboat 'family' for more years than he cares to remember. A lifelong passion for sailing and the sea led him to become a crew member of the Helensburgh lifeboat in the 1960s. A career move brought him to Oban where he promptly assisted in organising the arrival of the first lifeboat for Oban in 1971, volunteering as a crew member, and then, on retirement, becoming Station Chairman.
