Scottish aviation history was about to be made when, in the very early morning of September 24th 1910, amid the wide golden sands of Ettrick Bay on the Isle of Bute, the first entirely Scottish designed plane sat ready. Andrew Baird, born in 1862 in Sandhead on Luce Bay in the Rhinns of Galloway and now a blacksmith in Rothesay, and his friend Ned Striven, an electrical engineer with the Burgh of Rothesay, were ready for a flight into history. There on the sands of Ettrick Bay, the first powered flight in Scotland began.
