The early pastoralists who came to this area were men who had money to invest to establish large sheep and cattle runs in an almost unknown land. Some of these were very successful but others were ruined by the great drought of the 1860s. When the district was surveyed for farm allotments in 1875 it was soon taken up by men and women with a vision of a land of promise. Unfortunately the droughts of the nineties and the late twenties, followed by the world of depression of teh thirties caused a big majority of these settlers to leave the district with very little to show for their years of effort in developing this area. This book deals with many of the hardships which these pioneers experienced and of the amazing way they carried on in the face of adversity. Some were able to overcome the bad times and establish very successful farms not only in this district but in many parts of Australia.
