The letters of William Coates give us an insight into the all too familiar events of the Great War from a rare angle: the eyes of a non-conformist army chaplain. In these letters the reader is confronted with the gradual change from the romantic view of warfare at the beginning of the conflict, to the harsh reality of the trenches which glimmers through the censored lines at the front. Coates also gives us insight into the ecumenism at the heart of the army showing that pastoral care for the soldiers prevailed over denominational differences.
