June, 1941. When Nazi troops march on Leningrad. Shostakovich, one of Russia's most famous composers, stays to defend his city. At night he composes new work. Eventually forced to flee, he leaves behind conductor Karl Eliasberg. When a finished score is flown back over enemy lines, the starving orchestra are ordered to regroup.
