It is 1581, and after his father's death, St Andrews academic Hew Cullan is invited by the advocate Richard Cunningham to complete his legal education in Edinburgh. There he finds his father's manuscript entitled 'In Defence of the Law'. At first, he resists its influence, but then a young girl is found dead on the beach at St Andrews.
