This novel explores the life and death of Elspeth Buchan, the charismatic cult leader who scandalised eighteenth-century Scotland. Pursued by rumours of promiscuity and infanticide, the Buchanites were hounded and attacked wherever they tried to settle. Whether a witch or a prophetess, Elspeth persuaded her followers to throw off the shackles of marriage, share their goods and partners and wait patiently until the angels descended to pull them by their top knot through the clouds up to heaven. Robert Burns, well acquainted with several of the cult members, makes an appearance.
