Trapped between cultures : the rude awakening of an English dilettante in China

John Harrison's accomplished use of language and imagery takes the reader back in time, to discover a culture which had been forcibly ripped apart from the inside out and which had not fully recovered. It was into this post-Cultural Revolution world of China in 1983 that a naïve young Londoner was immersed. He needed to assimilate rapidly the language, values and thinking of the Chinese. And it was in this world that he met and fell passionately in love with the beautiful Chinese eye doctor Zhang Dong. The story takes place against a backdrop of the political developments in China at that period - including the trial of the 'Gang of Four' and China's first steps into a market economy.
