Spring remembered : a Scottish Jewish childhood
Cowan, Evelyn1974
Books, Manuscripts
Evelyn Cowan's family belonged to the Jewish community which once inhabited the Gorbals of Glasgow; and even in the midst of the Depression of 1929 the spiritual wealth with which it was so richly endowed enabled it to triumph over its material poverty. In and out of the world so vividly recreated in her fascinating sketches of Jewish family life, as seen by an emotional and intelligent little girl of eight or nine years old flit ... many denizens of her beloved Glasgow. But the figure to which her reminiscences of childhood owe most of their abundant comic vitality is that of her widowed mother, a woman of indomitable spirit whose educated heart held her family together; and the joys that she recollects outnumber the sorrows.
