Recollections of a tour made in Scotland a.d.1803

Wordsworth, Dorothy1981
Books, Manuscripts
A year after Wordsworth's marriage, shortly after his first son was born, Dorothy and William - accompanied by Coleridge - set out on their six-weeks' tour of Scotland. They did not attempt to cover the far north, but their tour was nevertheless a considerable adventure. ... This journal has abundant historic value, for it marks the state of Scotland at a time before the flood of English interest and tourism had poured across the Border. We must remember that Dorothy was writing not for the public, but for a small family circle. What she offers us is the most perfect fidelity to her own experience, for she sets down precisely what she saw and heard and felt at the time. She had the observant eye which is so essential to all good travel writing, but she also had a feeling heart which fills her descriptions with a warmth of love and sympathy. She came not to criticize, but to know and feel.
