Violette Szabo virtually dedicated her life to the husband she so adored and with whom she had spent, alas, so little time. She had already done some war work, and served for a time in the ATS, when his death in Libya little more than two years after their marriage quickened in her the desire to do something really useful for her country. And indeed she did. Her heroic exploits as a Secret Agent - she took a main and daring part in the plan to stop crack German reinforcements being put into action after the D-Day landings - were entirely successful, but they led to her capture and imprisonment. After torture, weeks of rigorous questioning and then forced labour, she was shot by the Nazis at Ravensbruck Prison Camp in the closing phases of the war.
