Scotland and Australia 1788-1850 : emigration, commerce and investment
Macmillan, David S.1967
Books, Manuscripts
This book is a study of the early connection between Scotland and the Australian colonies. It attempts to show how Scottish enterprise and emigration were turned towards an important section of the British overseas empire. It explains how Scottish middle class influences came to be strong in the infant colonies of Australia, and seeks to portray some of the vital commercial forces at work in the Scotland of the period 1815-1850, when Scotland belatedly underwent its Industrial Revolution and became the scene of dynamic developments in finance and industrial growth.
