aWe live in a society today where it is very much the exception, rather than the rule, for an individual, let alone individuals, to risk losing their home, livelihood, social acceptability, indeed everything, for religious conviction. Nearly two hundred years ago, some of the inhabitants of Kintyre were made of sterner stuff and from among these individuals arose several Congregational churches which were for many years centres of religious activity and evangelistic witness throughout the district and beyond. In common with other Congregational churches they were more successful in holding forth great principles and rearing strong individuals than in building large fellowships. They sowed and often others reaped. The churches arose to meet local spiritual needs and from them, in their short life-span, came individuals destined to play important roles in the local community and the world at large.
