John Ramsay of Kildalton : being an account of his life in Islay and including the diary of his trip to Canada in 1870
Ramsay, Freda1969
Books, Manuscripts
John Ramsay of Kiladalton was a 19th century businessman with a difference. Distiller, ship-owner, Justice of the Peace, Member of Parliament, and Laird of Kildalton, he rose to fortune on the island of Islay. But unlike most 19th century capitalists, Ramsay was a humane man with a lively social conscience. An exploding population and repeated crop losses had produced real poverty among the Islaymen on John Ramsay's lands. So, after he had exhausted all available forms of relief and assistance, John Ramsay began to encourage and assist his people to emigrate to Canada.
