The first anthology of its kind, this selection shows the development of poetry in aggrandised Scots from the first seminal works of Hugh MacDiarmid in the twenties to the wide variety of verse being produced in the present day. Through the arrangement of the selection by decades the reader is enabled to witness the changing poetry scene in Scots throughout the fifty-five-year period, during which the literary landscape has been transformed by the achievements of MacDiarmid's genius and its subsequent inspiring influence on the generations of younger Scots makars who have followed his superb example. Published in honour of MacDiarmid's eighty-fifth birthday, the anthology demonstrates both the continuing relevance of his own work and the range of his influence on the verse of no fewer than twenty younger writers. The editor, Alexander Scott, himself among the outstanding poets of the period, is Head of the Department of Scottish Literature in the University of Glasgow.
