Jessica Mitford writes: "Married in 1943 to Robert Treuhaft, well-known Oakland labor lawyer. Have lived in Oakland for about 15 years. We have two children, Contancia Romilly (to whom this book is dedicated) born in 1941 and Benjamin Treuhaft born in 1947. Together with my husband, I have been involved in a number of civil rights causes over the years; we have consequently been attacked from time to time by the House Committee on Un-American activities and similar local agencies, who are more interested in Rebels than in Hons."
