The field of sighing : a Highland boyhood

Cameron, Donald1966
Books, Manuscripts
Donald Cameron spent the first seventeen years of his life on a mountain farm, The Field of Sighing, in the Western Highlands of Scotland. He was a shepherd at the age of fourteen, and in this book he recalls his boyhood years before the war in one of Scotland's wildest and remotest parts. The seasons and the gaunt magnificence of the mountain landscape, the sea, the wildlife, birds and flowers, form the setting to his description of the small farming community that was dominated by Herself - the author's grandmother, whose iron determination to better the family had carried them from a one-cow croft to the 8,000 harch acres of the Field of Sighing.
