"A hero of our time" (1840) is the first of the great Russian novels. A thematically linked cycle of stories, it attains its unity as an episodic novel through the enigmatic central character of Pechorin, perhaps the most ruthless portrayal of one of 19th-century Russia's "superfluous men". Generically a unique combination of elements from romanticism and realism, Lermontov's novel, with its unusual narrative sturcture, its all-pervasive irony and its fierce exposure of amorality, retains all its fascination for the modern reader.
