This is a companion volume to Brian Gardner's anthology of the poetry of the First World War, "Up the line to death". Many of the poets of the Second World War - at least forty of whom died on active service - are already forgotten. The poetry of the Second World War has too often been dismissed as inferior to that of the First. This book shows how wrong that assessment is...the overall quality of the poetry is greatly superior to that of the earlier war, both in maturity of response and in technical ability.
