Most communities have their 'characters' or eccentrics, but these worthies often fade from memory as people who knew them pass away. The little hamlet of Rashfield near Kilmun had one such man born in the small community who has remained a legend, but who presents some questions today.Duncan Marshall was locally well known in his day, and he achieved a certain amount of fame beyond his neighbourhood. The 'Rashfield Hermit' had indeed become recognised nationally during his lifetime, and he attracted visitors from far and wide. While locals still occasionally speak of 'The Hermit', details of Duncan's life, and even his name, have long been obscured, and this is an attempt to draw together any information available about this interesting man.
