"There are perhaps few people who realise that the Italian province of Tuscany was at one time an independent Grand Duchy. In 1737 the last Medici ruler, Gian Gastone, died childless, and Tuscany fell to Francis of Lorraine, husband of Maria Theresia of Austria. For the next 123 years the Grand Duchy was ruled by their descendants. A great-grandchild was Grand Duke Leopold II (1797-1870), Tuscany's last proper Habsburg ruler and the ancestor of all the people in this book. ... Grand Duke Leopold was married twice, firstly in 1817 to Princess Maria Anna of Saxony, who bore him three daughters and who died in 1832. The following year he married Princess Maria Antonia of Bourbon-Sicily, by whom he had ten children and innumerable grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This is their story in pictures."
