Reading the landscape of Bute : a geological field guide
Hill, Julian2006
Books, Manuscripts
This guide to the geology of Bute has been written to interest those who are drawn to the island by its scenic diversity and beauty. Amateur and professional geologists, too, will find the island's rocks and landscapes of considerable interest, not least because Bute is somewhat neglected compared to neighbouring Arran, where geological studies extend back to the time of the great 18th century pioneer, James Hutton. There is still much to learn about the rocks of Bute. The guide is planned in two parts, a general introductory section on the island's geology and scenery, followed by excursions to places where interesting geological features are displayed. Readers can find further information in the reference section of the guide. Technical terms have been kept to a minimum, those used in the text are explained in the glossary. Maps, drawings and photographs illustrate the text and help to explain some basic principles of geology.
