Mairghread nighean Lachlainn : Song-maker of Mull

Books, Manuscripts
Mairghread nighean Lachlainn, who may have lived in Mull from about 1660 till about 1750 and was probably a Maclean, is a perfect example of the Gaelic clan poet of her time. We have eleven songs of her composition, all in highly formal praise of the Maclean of Duart family or their close kinsmen. The most important of her subjects are Sir Iain of Duart, who died in 1716, having led the Macleans to fight for the Stuarts at Killiecrankie in 1689 and at Sheriffmuir in 1715, and his son, Sir Eachann, who died abroad in 1750, having been imprisoned during the Rising of 1745.
