Garron Bridge, or Drochaid Gear-abhainn (Short River), is also known as the Shira Bridge after the adjacent loch, a short inlet off the north side of Loch Fyne that is located a little to the northeast of the town of Inverary. Preliminary works for the bridge were begun in 1744 and the structure completed c1749. Together with the adjacent later 18th century Garron Lodge and an intervening arcaded screen wall, they form an important Category A listed building. It is also located within the Inverary Castle policies boundaries as listed in the 'Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes'.This study was commissioned on behalf of Scotland TranServ by Firat Archaeological Services Ltd. It deals with the historic 18th century bridge bypassed by the A83 trunk road in the 1980s. It seeks to combine architectural and archaeological assessments to examine the development of the built structure, establish its present structural condition and provide recommendations for essential and desirable repair works and to propose a regime for its long-term maintenance.
