In the early 1840s, the Scots-born Angus Maclaine established himself as a sheep farmer on the lower reaches of Dry Creek in what are now the northern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. This paper attempts to explain how he came to be there, and what subsequently happened to him. It also illuminates some of the complexities of mid-19th century colonialism and colonial identity.
