William Robertson was the founder of the largest and most respected fleet of ships engaged in the coastal bulk trades on the west coast of the British Isles. The Gem Line showed a remarkable ability to increase in good times, and managed to survive, and even grow, during adverse conditions. The operations of Robertson's first four vessels were confined to the Forth and Clyde Canal and the waters of the Firth of Clyde, but by 1904 the company owned 50 ships and operated further afield.
