The name of Colquhoun was taken from the Barony of Colquhoun which lay along the hills to the north of Kilpatrick in Dunbartonshire. At a time in history when 'surnames' did not exist, people used a Christian name and were further identified by where they lived or by some personal characteristic, even by their trade. The Colquhouns spread their possession of land and influence throughout the region, acquiring many properties which had formerly belonged to other prominent families. At various times, they obtained lands in Stirling, Fife, Ayrshire and Ireland. They did not always retain possession of these properties, but the spread of the name, sometimes in varied form, lingered in these areas.
