Kintyre in days gone by

McNeill, Carol, 1939-2012
Books, Manuscripts
When Charles and Dennis MacGrory took up the newly popular hobby of photography in the late 19th and early 20th century, they recorded the life and times of the people and landscapes of Kintyre and further afield for their own satisfaction. Their work, however, has achieved much more than that. The collection of photographs taken by the MacGrory brothers, who were born in Campbeltown in the 1860s, has come down the years to provide a rich legacy of images which give a first-hand picture of what life in rural Scotland was like in the years between 1890 and 1914. This selection of images takes in their travels up and down the peninsula of Kintyre, presumably by foot or by horse-drawn transport. No identification of the places they photographed was made (as again this was primarily for their own interest), but many of the towns, villages and landscapes have retained enough of their early character to be recognisable today.
