Education in Argyll 1800-1872

Jackson, Alison L.1969
Books, Manuscripts
After a brief survey of the economic and social conditions found in 19th century Argyll, the thesis examines the parish school, for long the only available source of education. The distribution of these schools, even with the provision of side-schools after 1803, proved totally inadequate for the needs of the county. The physical conditions of the school buildings are considered; the subjects taught and the fees charged are surveyed; and the changes in schoolmasters' income and methods during the century noted. The tenure of office is studied, with examples of substitutes, assistants for aged masters, the difficulties of dismissal, and the belated provision of retiring allowances.
