This list is not simply a roll-call of those who were prosecuted for heresy in Scotland. It is clearly not only that of Scotland's comparatively small band of martyrs. As the title suggests, it embraces a wide range of individuals and their varied involvement in the move towards religious reform, from the earliest critics of traditional belief and practice in the 15th century to those who threw in their lot with the reformers at defining moments in the critical years 1558-1560. The list is inevitably incomplete since we shall never know the religious attitudes of most Scots of the time, including many of those in public life. However, in the case of those who were prosecuted, including those who were prepared to pay the extreme penalty for heresy, loss of life, an attempt has been made to include all recorded cases.
