Shipwrights belong to one of the oldest crafts in the world. For centuries they have built the ships that explored the world, or that transported goods and people from one country to another. For 80 years these proudest of craftsmen were organised by the Associated Shipwrights Society. Set up in 1882, rather later that many other unions, the Society represented shipwrights through some of their most tumultuous years: the great days at the end of the 19th century when British shipwrights built four out of every five of the world's ships; the First World War; the terrible inter-war depression when thousands were thrown out of work and scores of shipyards lay idle; the Second World War when victory depended upon their efforts at turning out more and more tonnage. This is the story of the union, setting it against the industrial and political events of the time. It is a history not only of the Society but also of Britain itself.
