Books, Manuscripts
This collection of proverbs in Scots, edited from the original MS in the Edinburgh University Library, contains 1637 proverbs, of which 648 are not to be found in contemporary or later collections. The compiler, as is proved in the introduction, was James Carmichaell, alumnus of St Andrew's University, teacher, minister of St Mary's parish, Haddington, witch-finder, grammarian, poet, and 'profound dreamer'. The collection dates from the first quarter of the 17th century.
