Books, Manuscripts
As with the Baptisms and Deaths recorded elsewhere, this booklet is a social document from which one can visualise the town. The prosperous times of the fishing and distilling of the late 1800s are reflected. The busiest times were at the turn of the previous century and during the Second World War when the base at Machrihanish was at its height. The Royal Navy and Women's Royal Naval Service are well represented in the 1940s.The first marriage in St Kiaran's was performed on 27th November 1849 between Eliza Walsh and Hugh Maciver. They signed the Register with a cross as 'his' and 'her' marks. A large number of grooms came from outwith Campbeltown - marrying Campbeltown girls - probably due to the fishing boats and at times of war.
