Pioneering painters : the Glasgow Boys

Billcliffe, Roger
Books, Manuscripts
The Glasgow Boys were true artisitc pioneers pursuing naturalist subject matter with strong, clean fresh colours. They absorbed foreigh influences and went on to develop a symbolist style with an emphasis on pattern and design. This brought Scottish art to the forefront of the European avant-garde. Their enthusiasm for pushing the boundaries of art was equalled by their dislike of the Scottish artistic establishment of their day. This book, which accompanies an exhibition held in Glasgow and London, looks at their body of work from 1880 until 1900 when it was at its most innovative and exciting. It celebrates and re-examines the Boys' vital contribution to the history of Scottish art and brings together all the major pictures accompanied by insightful specialist commentaries.
