Many people have a passing knowledge of the 'Hessians' due to their widespread employment as mercenaries on behalf of the British imperial government. In December 1745, 6,000 Hessian troops were brought to Scotland to combat the Jacobites and later some 30,000 were mobilised in the context of the American War of Independence alone. Their service was more successful in the brutal suppression of the Irish Rising of 1798, leaving bitter memories which endure to the present day. Although the various units were raised by different small independent states, they gained their collective name because Hesse was a major recruitment region. The coarse but durable cloth that was used in their uniforms has secured a permanent place in the English language. In this study, Axel Koehler outlines the way in which Scotsmen came to serve in the Hessian forces and he charts their campaign history during the Seven Years War in Europe.
