The Glasgow Navy : the ships of the Clyde Navigation Trust. Part one - the Cluthas

One feature of Glasgow's public transport which is almost forgotten today is the Clutha service, which from 1884 to 1903 provided a cheap and frequent service of steamers up and down the Clyde between Victoria Bridge at Stockwell Street and Whiteinch. These vessels, which began running in the spring of 1884, soon found favour with the public and annual patronage grew to over three million passengers. The first the Subway opened, then electric trams began to operate on the city's streets and patronage of the little steamers declined sharply. They faded out of existence on a miserable November night in 1903, with little notice being taken of their departure from the scene and today no-one can remember them.
